It is a better choice than Kittel's book. Ashcroft & Mermins book "Solid state physics" is IMO the best graduate level book. My personal favorite SS Physics book is "Atomic and Electronic Structure of Solids" by Kaxiras because its a computational Solid State physics book.

I used this book in an Introducion to Solid State Physics course, and although I found subjects were well-described and complete, the text was hard to comprehense and quite poorly written.

My professor explained that there are few books that teach Solid State Physics on this level, and that of those books this one may be the best there is.3/5(8). Kittel is probably the most popular out there. I don’t like it as much, though, because in my opinion Kittel’s style is a bit terse in that he doesn’t provide as much detail into deriving the equations as I’d.

The objective of Solid State Physics is to introduce college seniors and first-year graduate students in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and related areas to this diverse and fascinating field. I have attempted to present this complex subject matter in a coherent, integrated manner, emphasizing fundamental scientific ideas to give the student a strong 5/5(1).

The Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences consists of fundamental scientific books prepared by leading researchers in the field. They strive to communicate, in a systematic and comprehensive way, the basic principles as well as new developments in theoretical and experimental solid-state physics.

Now available in paperback, Solid State Physics is designed to serve as a first text for a course on the physics of solids. Updated to reflect recent work in the field, this book emphasizes crystalline solids, going from the crystal lattice to the ideas of reciprocal space and Brillouin zones, and develops these ideas for lattice vibrations, for the theory of metals, and for semiconductors.5/5(1).

Graduate Classical Mechanics. This note describes the following topics: The Calculus of Variations, Fermat's Principle of Least Time, Hamilton's Principle and Noether's Theorem, Mechanical Similarity, Hamilton's Equations, Poisson Brackets, A New Expression for the Action, Maupertuis' Principle, Canonical Transformations, Liouville's Theorem, The Hamilton-Jacobi Equation, Adiabatic Invariants.

•The Solid State, by H M Rosenberg, OUP This slightly more advanced book was written a few decades ago to cover what was the solid state course at Oxford at that time.

Some parts of the course have since changed, but other parts are well covered in this book. •Solid-State Physics, 4ed, by H. Ibach and H. Luth, Springer-Verlag. Charles Kittel Solid State Physics - Free download Ebook, Handbook, Textbook, User Guide PDF files on the internet quickly and easily.

This is a book which covers the topic of solid state physics comprehensively. Starting from the structure of matter and various types of bonds in the first chapter the mechanical properties are treated in the second chapter.

The second chapter also includes a discussion of Hooke's Law, plastic flow, dislocations, elasticity etc. Solid-state physics is the study of rigid matter, or solids, through methods such as quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and is the largest branch of condensed matter -state physics studies how the large-scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scalesolid-state physics forms a theoretical basis of materials science.
